Topic: Types of sentences (structure) Strand: Writing Lesson Description: This lesson will help learners understand the need to organize their thoughts into paragraphs to provide structure and flow to the text using simple, compound, and complex sentences. After this lesson, learners must be provided with a platform to publish their writing using different digital tools to enhance their writing skills or publish their final drafts using digital tools. With this skill, they can also participate in a community of writers to enhance their writing skills, evolve, and progress as a writer. Learning Objectives By the end of the lesson the learner will be able to: demonstrate the ability to incorporate types of sentences in their writing to organize their thoughts into well-structured paragraphs. Note: The above objectives can have multiple objectives specific to the topic Prior knowledge They have learnt simple and compound sentences in classes Iv and V. Lesson Introduction Learners will watch the video lesson to review the use of simple, compound, and complex sentences to write coherent paragraphs. A simple sentence consists of only one clause which contains one subject and one verb. A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions. Complex sentence has at least one independent clause plus at least one dependent clause. A set of words with no independent clause may be an incomplete sentence, also called a sentence fragment. A sentence consisting of at least one dependent clause and at least two independent clauses may be called a complex-compound sentence or compound-complex sentence. Learners will be asked to write a narrative essay on the topic of their choice incorporating types of sentences. They will be encouraged to follow the writing process. The teacher will provide constructive feedback.
